About aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art created during the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba.  The art is based on using spherical movements to turn attackers force against them, allowing the technique to finish by using a joint immobilization or a throw.

The art dates back to 12th Century Japan and hence also has a strong association with weapons.  In aikido weapon work is practiced with a bokken (wooden training sword) and jo (wooden staff).

Aikido is usually translated as The way of Harmony of Spirit due to it use of redirection of energy, rather than meeting force with force.  In aikido the aim is that neither person is harmed once a technique has been used.
